My bowling performance gave me a lot of confidence: Dilshan

Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara came up with fine batting efforts to help Sri Lanka clinch the five-match ODI series against South Africa. Dilshan scored a superb unbeaten 115 while Sangakkara hit 91 as the pair added a mammoth 184-run stand for the 2nd wicket as Sri Lanka chased down 239 with 6 overs to spare.

The nine-wicket win in the 4th ODI at Pallekele helped the hosts take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the 5-game series and skipper Angelo Mathews praised the bowlers for restricting South Africa to 238 after the visitors got off to a good start. Speaking after the match, Mathews said, he was a bit worried after he lost the toss but was satisfied in the end after Ajantha Mendis (4 wickets) and Lasith Malinga (3 wickets) bowled well to hold the Proteas back.

"I was a bit worried when I lost the toss, they started well and we did well to hold them back. The way the bowlers bowled today was quite superb. We wanted to keep them under 250. The middle-order batters haven't seen Mendis, so wanted to use him more then," Mathews said.

Mathews said the victory was possible because of the seniors like Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan, who have been performing consistently. The Lankan skipper also indicated that changes are unlikely for the last game as they are targeting a 4-1 finish.

"The seniors have been scoring the bulk of the runs for the last few series and that's why we are winning. Winning 4-1 is our target, so maybe not many changes, though we will think about playing a few youngsters for the last game," Mathews said.

South Africa captain AB de Villiers reckoned that his side was at least 30 runs short and blamed the middle order for not being able to support JP Duminy, who came up with a splendid 97 to lift the visiting side to a decent total after a collapse. de Villiers also gave credit to Dilshan and Sangakkara, mentioning that they took the game away from the South Africans.

"We had a great foundation with Amla and de Kock, but we were 30 runs short. We were never there to support JP (Duminy) at the end who played a great innings. (There was a) little bit of dew around, it skidded on, but no excuses as we were outplayed by Dilshan and Sanga - credit to them."

South Africa had an opportunity to send back Sangakkara early when Duminy had rapped him on the pads. Replays suggested that the left-hander was plumb in front but the Proteas did not opt for a review although they had one available. de Villiers said he was confident about the shout but did not opt for the DRS as Duminy and keeper Quinton de Kock were of the opinion that the ball would have missed the leg stump.

"I was pretty much confident, but Duminy and the keeper were reckoning that it was going down leg (replying to why he didn't review a plumb LBW off Sanga early on). It's pretty difficult standing at mid-wicket to get the angles right, I'm a big fan of the DRS and if I thought it was anywhere close to being out, I would've reviewed it. I will have a chat with Russell [Domingo] and then go about planning for the next series."

Dilshan, who scored his 17th ODI ton, was named the Man of the Match, and the right-handed opener who had also picked up two wickets in the game, said his bowling performance gave him the confidence to do well with the bat.

"I took a lot of confidence into the 2nd innings after my show with the ball. I'm very happy with my all-round show today. Amla was going well, so to get his wicket was a key," Dilshan said.

Speaking about his partnership with Sangakkara, Dilshan said their plan was to rotate the strike as much as possible in the early overs and then play aggressively in the middle period.

"Our plan was to rotate the strike during the early overs and then kick on during the middle overs. I'm scoring a lot of hundreds recently as I aim to go for a big one if I get a start."

Mohammad Hafeez, the Pakistan skipper, was ecstatic after clinching the 2nd T20I against West Indies and with that the series as well. He said he placed faith on his spinners to help defend the low score. "I was comfortable with the score of 135 as we had four spinners in the team," said Hafeez.

Both Hafeez and Man of the Match, Umar Akmal were unanimous in praise of the ODI skipper Misbah-ul-Haq at the end of the tour.

"The seniors supported me well and the management also backed me. Misbah backed me well in the ODIs," said Umar Akmal who also said that his improved wicket-keeping helped his batting.
